Starlane

What changed

Starlane is built in the open and mostly built from the signal board. Ideas from players are marked, with what shipping them paid.

The market has its own screen

  • The market is a page now, not the bottom half of the station page. It is first in the row of places at the top.
  • The station page is what a station is: who else is in dock, the belt, the board, the academy, the yard, the local news.
  • Nothing about trading changed. Same ladder, same goods, same prices.

Go looking for something nobody has made

  • The bench has two lines of enquiry. Work out a method finds a recipe; prospect for a good finds a material that does not exist until somebody finds it.
  • You choose which of the two you are looking for, not which one you get. What you can reach is decided by engineering, which is trained rather than bought.
  • A good you discover is sold by no station, ever. You make it and sell it to other pilots — or teach the recipe.
  • Six to find, and whoever gets to each first is named on it for ever.

The same game, half the scrolling

  • Starlane on a phone was about twice as tall as it needed to be. Every table becomes a card on a narrow screen, and those cards are now half the height.
  • Nothing has been taken away. Every figure, panel and button is still there at every size.

The other half of the market

  • There is a second market at every station, and it is other pilots — goods out of their holds and recipes they will teach, with a callsign on every line.
  • You can put things up too. Name a price; it stands for seven days, and unsold goods come back to you. Teaching a recipe does not cost you knowing it.
  • Listing costs one percent of what you are asking, and you do not get it back.
  • A listing lives where you left it. What the rim pays is still something you go and find out.
  • And the station's prices show their working — every row opens onto the ladder behind the quote.

Somebody's name on it

  • There is a workshop at Sol, Rigel, Cygnus and Lyra. A pilot with engineering can open an enquiry and come away with a recipe.
  • Whoever finds a recipe first is named against it, on every pilot's screen, for ever. More than one pilot can still find the same thing.
  • You cannot pick which recipe you get. The bench chases the next one your engineering can reach.
  • Every recipe eats helium-3, so a manufacturer works the giants or buys from somebody who does.
