Starlane is built in the open and mostly built from the signal board. Ideas from players are marked, with what shipping them paid.
Somebody at the dock knows who you are

The list on your station page is somebody talking now — whoever is at the station your origin started you in. Five origins, five people, and they do not say it the same way.
Two of the six steps pay. Not enough to skip either.
It is still not a tutorial. Nothing is locked behind it, and it disappears on its own.
Bounty work, and a licence that pays for itself

Winning a fight pays, if you hold a Bounty Licence and the space is policed. Without it a win pays what it always paid, which is nothing.
You can go looking: fly a patrol, spend the fuel, and whatever it turns up is waiting when you come back.
Standing is something you can finally work for. Every bounty moves it, so the Security ladder is climbable.
A system runs out of pirates and fills back up over a few days, exactly like a belt.
The core is empty and always will be.
You can lose the ship

A hull at zero is gone, and so is everything in it.
You cannot lose a ship to bad luck. Handing over cargo never costs a hull point, and no single hit destroys a healthy ship — it takes two decisions, both shown to you first.
You never lose the character. Credits, skills, certifications, standing, chart and every other ship survive. A tug brings you home in about eight minutes.
Insurance, at the yard, pays what a yard would have paid for the hull and never more.
Repairs can be partial now — say how many points you want back.
Something is holding the lane

Jump out of the core and you may find company. Fight, run, or hand over cargo.
The core is safe and always will be. The rim is where this happens, and the rim is where the money is.
Your weapon and shield tiers finally do something: the gun buys your cargo back, the shield buys your repair bill down. If you already paid for them, they are worth what you paid.
Gunnery, evasion and engineering earn their training time.
Nothing expires. An encounter waits as long as you like — you simply cannot jump until you deal with it.
The fourth step can be finished

“Find out what this station makes” now ticks when you sell something. It never did, for anyone.
Reported from the board, and thank you — the other five steps were checked and they are fine.
